2009 HI-USA Golden Triangle Award winner is...
HI-NC Council President Sandy Preston for exemplary volunteer service spanning more than 20 years, often serving on Executive Committees at both state and regional HI-USA organizational levels. Vice President Judye Adkins (pictured in the header above on the left) spearheaded the nomination, with the collaboration of the NC Board. Was Sandy surprised? Yes!

Since I got home and looked at the list of prior recipients, I really am honored to be among them...last two being Doug Markham and Joe Chesler!"
Doug Markham is currently serving asVice President-Southern Region, HI-USA
Board. Joe Chesler serves on the HI-NC Board.
2009 Council Volunteer of the Year is...
Julie Beck, the NC Council’s Volunteer of the Year is Director of Student Activities at Mt Olive College. She received a Certificate of Appreciation from the National organization. Julie has presented several travel workshops for students and community members. In addition, Julie was delighted to run into Bob Beard (pictured with her below), her former professor at Bowling Green, at the National Council Meeting in Boston.

· Participated in HI-USA Common Programs Training Institute in Boston
· Presented World Travel 101 at Mt Olive College in September and November 2008
· Presented Women Traveling Solo at Wayne County Community College in February 2009
· Promoted "Try HI" 3-month free trial memberships at Mt Olive College
Update! October 9, 2010--Julie has been elected to the HI-NC Board of Directors and is now serving as Vice-President. Julie travels extensively, often solo, on all continents. She'll be offering World Travel 101 and Women Traveling Solo this fall at Mount Olive College.

Congratulations to Sandy for her award. That was so exciting to be there and see how surprised she was to win this well-deserved award.
I look forward to continued work with the HI-USA and especially the North Carolina Council. This stuff is right up my alley.
2008 Council Volunteer of the Year ...
Lynne Bresler is a Girl Scout leader with the Girl Scouts of the Coastal Pines and she has served as a hostelling liaison with the Girl Scouts in the Triangle area. She participated in the HI-USA Girl Scout Training Institute in Boston in June 2006. She has led Girl Scouts on bike rides from the Blue Ridge Hostel in Galax as part of the Girl Scout Discover the World Patch program. She presented a workshop about hostelling to Girl Scout leaders at the Camp Mary Atkinson GS Center in Selma, NC in October 2006 and a World Travel 101 workshop for Girl Scouts planning a trip to Hawaii in May 2007. She was instrumental in recruiting two new volunteers from her GS Council and both have made trips to the Blue Ridge Hostel with Scouts. She has been a volunteer with the NC Council for three years and frequently attends Council meets and special events.

Volunteers ...
Volunteers across North Carolina have made presentations about hostelling for Girl Scout leaders, at REI, for school youth groups and Rotary Clubs. Volunteering often includes a weekend of training offered by our National staff in locations like Boston and Chicago. All of the work of the Council is managed by the volunteer members of the Board of Directors. Share your excitement about hostelling and find out how you can help by e-mailing us today!

GSA Troop 154 from Raleigh went to DC boosted by an HI-NC youth travel scholarship award. While there, they became ambassadors, hosting a pizza party to help other hostel guests mix and mingle!
